An incident in which a man stepped on the government bench during a session of the National Council caused a stir on Wednesday. It is now known how the intruder got this far. That is why Parliament’s security concept is being examined.
As President of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) informed deputies on Thursday morning, the intruder was a “stalker”. That means he entered the plenary hall directly behind a club employee. The president has already discussed the incident, how to prevent unauthorized burglary in the future, and should also be discussed in a security committee.
The club employees were in any case requested to wear their identity card visibly, so that it is immediately clear whether they have access to the side rooms of the plenary hall. There shouldn’t be any danger. The man had been checked at the entrance. He was registered for a one-hour visit to the gallery.
In fact, however, he sneaked into the plenary hall and took a seat on the government pew, which was empty at the time. During a break in the session on the orders of the second chairman of the National Council, Doris Bures, he was taken out of the room without resistance. The troublemaker had previously announced, “Jesus Christ is your salvation.” During police questioning, he claimed to have “got lost” on his way to the visitors’ gallery.
However, the action was planned by the well-known spreader of confused conspiracy myths, who then posted a video on his Telegram channel, where he proudly reported on the incident.
