MPs and ministers are defending themselves against accusations of passivity. “Are on the road in the constituency and continue to work.” Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) is only on vacation for two weeks.
The headline in the “Krone” about the politicians’ long summer vacation caused a stir on the political scene. Several MPs and ministers objected.
“I have been out and about in my constituency all summer, meeting party officials, making company visits and holding public consultation hours,” said Vorarlberg NEOS MP Gerald Loacker. He also poses parliamentary questions in the summer. Like everyone else, his vacation is limited to two to three weeks.
Visits to federal states and festival openings
Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) will be on holiday in Greece with his family for two weeks in August. Until then, he will continue to work normally, the chancellery said. On Friday, he received Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (see story below). Next week he will start his summer tour and make several work appointments. The traditional Summer Council of Ministers meets on 25 July.
Ministries do not have company holidays
Political scientists Peter Filzmaier and Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle confirm this in an interview with “Krone”. “The ministries do not have company or factory holidays and must be managed in the same way during the summer,” says Filzmaier. It is true that the National Council, the Federal Council and the state parliaments have long vacations, but the members of parliament “commit themselves to their constituencies”. “Many politicians use the summer to travel around the states and to maintain contact with the party base and voters,” Stainer-Hämmerle explains. The autumn campaigns are also prepared in the summer.
