Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler considers the references to “normal thinking” people repeatedly tried by the Lower Austrian governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) as “very dangerous and moreover pre-fascist”.
“Such an approach is the gateway to evil in the world, to speak in the diction of the Catholic ÖVP,” Kogler said in the current “profile”.
Default “is time dependent”
Lately, Mikl-Leitner had often argued that he represented “the vast majority of normal-thinking people” or “the concerns of the normal-thinking broad middle section of the population”, for example on climate protection or gender issues.
For Kogler, this is “a fire hazard”: “Because what the norm is depends on the time. The church once thought it was normal to burn women.”
Also protect minorities
Democracy is about majorities – but minorities also need to be protected. “Good politicians promote what they believe in and don’t hide behind what they call the norm.”
Kogler also reiterated his intention, which he had just alluded to, to run again as the top Green Party candidate in the next National Council elections. “To answer with a quote from Van der Bellen: Unless a brick falls on my head, so be it.”
