Austria nine times. This summer, our head of the domestic policy department, Ida Metzger, is once again touring the nine states to interview all of the state governors. Johanna Mikl-Leitner starts. In an interview, the governor of Lower Austria defends why she wants to be the voice of normal thinkers. She tells Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler that the debate is “ridiculous”.
“crown”: Mrs Mikl-Leitner, in January you spent hundreds of thousands of euros promoting “togetherness” during the election campaign. Now there is a 180 degree turn and you start a categorization. Is the procedure typical of normal thinkers?
Johanna Mikl-Leitner: I find the discussion about this terminology ridiculous. Because what I or what we mean by normal thinkers is obvious.
What then?
Namely normal thinkers versus radicals versus extremes. Normal thinkers as opposed to the climate glue, to the Marxists, to the conspiracy theorists. Where people are becoming louder, more extreme and more radical. For this reason, many normal thinkers in the broad middle feel unheard and picked up on. That’s why it needs more sharpness, it needs a loud voice for the silent majority. I said a long time ago that I hate it when politicians focus more on fringe issues like sex stars, 100 miles on the Autobahn or legal cannabis than on things people actually care about.
