If Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) has his way, it would be better to reform the health system sooner rather than later. But even though the negotiations at official level are probably well advanced, there will probably not be a decision in the summer council of ministers on Tuesday.
The federal states are now demanding a vote at the highest political level, a spokesman for Carinthian Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ), currently chairman of the state governors’ conference, announced. A letter from the health officer of Carinthia, Beate Prettner (SPÖ), who is also currently the chairman of the state health officials, says that there is still a fundamental need for political coordination. In any case, health officials are willing to negotiate over the summer.
Among the unresolved issues that, according to Prettner, still need to be clarified at the political level, are mainly funding issues. In any case, nothing is yet known about a timely agreement on a reform, as the federal government would like.
Rauch appeals to “political responsibility of the state”
Rauch especially wants the private sector to be strengthened, which all negotiating partners support. In the context of the financial settlement, Rauch wants structural reforms for the health sector in the federal states. He recently appealed to provincial governors to take their “state political responsibility” seriously.
