The request is part of the agreement between the PSOE and Junts for the formation of the congress table.
The prosecution has informed the Spanish government that the final request to include Catalan, Basque and Galician in the official languages of the European Union (EU) does not exceed its duties given the current circumstances, as confirmed to Europe Press government sources .
The government has previously consulted the Public Prosecutor’s Office vis-à-vis the Acting Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albareswill this Thursday send a letter with this request to the Presidency of the Council of the EU, currently held precisely by Spain, and to the Secretary General of that body, Thérèse Blanchet.
The response from the Public Prosecutor’s Office was positive, as it was not considered “exceeding the duties assigned to the caretaker government,” the sources said. In its opinion, the Public Prosecution Service indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is under management Albares” is the competent authority to formulate the request, without prejudice to the powers that may accrue to the President of the Government or the Council of Ministers”.
In his letter, Albares specifically asks for Catalan, Basque and Galician to be included in the language regime of the EU, for which, as the minister himself admitted, the unanimity of the 27 Member States is necessary. He also requested that this issue be placed on the agenda of the next General Affairs Council (GAC) on 19 September.
