One day after meeting King Felipe VI during his round of deliberations to nominate a candidate for the investiture, the PNV spokesperson in the Congress of Deputies said: Aitor Estebanhas assured that the message he conveyed to the monarch was that “no candidate has the guaranteed vote of the PNV” and in this regard he has denied that the jeltzales have asked the king for anything in particular (several media outlets suggest that they have asked him not to put forward any candidates). “We didn’t ask anything, we just gave our opinion. Let him do what he sees fit,” he added of what he handed over to the head of state.

In a telephone interview offered to Radio Euskadi’s ‘Boulevard’ programme, Esteban pointed out that they have not received ‘any call’ from the PSOE since the negotiations at the Congress table, “They didn’t move the tab”, insisted. He has repeated that it is the socialists who are responsible for making ‘movements’. “Then we’ll start talking from there,” he said.

About him PPadmitted that the PNV answered the phone when called, but that at least they ‘made it very clear from the start that we wouldn’t be negotiating with them if we were in the Vox combination. We have not spoken to the Table (of Congress) except for investiture.”

Esteban has assured that it “will not be easy” for Sánchez to get the necessary support, because forces at stake are “very varied” and there are “differences” between them. For the Jeltzale politician, the pact will have to be “a very basic outline, a lowest common denominator”.

Regarding the decision the king may make, Esteban says it is not clear to him what he will ultimately decide. “He will have to judge whether he wants to let the clock run, because the majority has no candidate,” he concludes.

Finally, he regretted that the option for the PNV was present at the conference table: “It would have been interesting because it would have given assurances to the Nationalist forces to move Congress’s agenda. But nothing happens.”
