Party conference on Friday – Karl Mahrer for freestyle as new chairman of the ÖVP Vienna

Date:

After the party congress is before the party congress: Like the federal party recently, the Vienna People’s Party will soon officially elect its new chairman. On Friday, Karl Mahrer will be appointed as the successor to Gernot Blümel, who resigned from all political positions during the ÖVP turbulence of December last year. His successor was formerly a police officer and member of the National Council. He has already moved from Parliament to City Hall.

Karl Mahrer is currently not the executive councilor – a position that only exists in Vienna. This gives opposition parties seats in the city senate. This particular position enabled the 67-year-old to work in local politics. Due to lack of mandate, he could not become a councilor.

“Critical times. For Vienna.”
Under the motto of the party congress “Decisive times. For Vienna.” Mahrer has now been promoted from director to official party chairman. The 37th regular state party conference will take place from 2 p.m. in the Steffl Arena – where the ice sport is otherwise central and which was previously called the Albert-Schultz-Halle. According to the ÖVP, about 500 delegates and 1000 guests are expected at the turquoise event.

Not only will you be listening to a speech by the new head of state, the newly appointed party chairman, Chancellor Karl Nehammer, will also be speaking. Mahrer predecessor Gernot Blümel will also be present, but a speech is not on the agenda, according to the Viennese ÖVP.

The team and key areas are presented
Mahrer will also present his new team at the party conference, namely the squad of delegates. In the future there will be six instead of three deputy party chairmen, although a coarser castling has also been made here. Of the old team, only Margarete Kriz-Zwittkovits – she is a councilor and deputy president of the Chamber of Commerce – is still with us.

In addition, seniors’ union boss Ingrid Korosec and the local lawyer of the Chamber of Commerce – and former CEO of the Main Association of Social Insurance Institutions – Alexander Biach are brought into the team. Town hall representatives Caroline Hungerländer, Elisabeth Olicar and Harald Zierfuss also become deputy Viennese ÖVP representatives.

They also want to present important content and “future topics”. These have been developed in recent weeks in a participatory process with the neighborhood and sub-organisations.
