Gruppe Wagner – Austria: tougher crackdown on Putin’s mercenaries

Date:

The infamous Wagner Group worries the EU around the world. Whether in Ukraine, or in Mali, where numerous army soldiers are stationed. A “red line” must now be drawn, no compromises can be made with the far-right mercenaries, Vienna said.

When EU defense ministers meet in Brussels today, the focus will also be on what is currently the world’s most feared group of mercenaries: Wagner. The Russian company, founded by a neo-Nazi, has been hiring for eight years old soldiers and sending them – mainly on behalf of the Russian government – to Syria, Ukraine or even Mali. And it is precisely there in West Africa that the illegal immigrants also make it difficult for the Austrians:

Nearly 80 soldiers from the federal army are no longer able to fulfill their EU mission and train Malian soldiers here, as mercenaries from the Wagner group not only took command of fully trained Malians in a coup d’état, but also massacred the civilian population. The name goes back to the nickname of their commander, the former officer of the military intelligence service GRU, Dmitrij Utkin, who is said to have a reverence for Hitler and therefore also for the music of Richard Wagner.

Mercenaries should no longer have a foothold in the future
“It’s time to draw a ‘red line’,” the Defense Ministry in Vienna told the “Krone”. “It cannot be that Wagner goes into a country and we go out.”

“No cooperation”
Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) wants to call for tougher action against Wagner at today’s summit, together with other EU countries. “We must think together about how we deal with such groups in the future and take measures to ensure that such a revenue model becomes less attractive and cannot gain a foothold in future crisis situations,” said the minister. “There can be no collaboration with Wagner.”
