Bernd Kniefacz from the independent teachers’ union ÖLI-UG puts the current situation in the local school system in drastic terms. “There is a lack of qualified staff and trainee teachers often leave schools frustrated because they are deployed before their training is even completed. They are literally being burned,” he complains in the krone.tv interview (see video above).
In many cases, teachers at the basic level, such as primary school, are constantly being replaced. The students therefore lack a clear reference person.
Different payment systems
Due to different payment systems, there is always unrest in the staff rooms: “The school is on fire. The start of the school year was especially intense this year. “Before, during the summer, more people reported this than ever before.”
„The curriculum needs to be cleaned up.”
Kniefacz proposes several actions that could make the teaching profession more attractive: “The curriculum needs to be cleaned up, the pay more attractive.” It would also be useful to give the speakers a ticket for public transport in addition to the salary.
In addition, an effort must be made to bring the “pleasure of learning” back to the fore: “Daily life at school is primarily about learning for grades. Above all, the children’s individual strengths must be strengthened.”
Many more details, such as how politically motivated the domestic education system is and what role Education Minister Polaschek plays, can be seen in the video above.
