According to the European Commission, the situation at the Austrian-Slovenian border has “improved” after the introduction of temporary border controls: a spokeswoman for the Brussels authority confirmed in Brussels on Tuesday that the number of illegal border crossings had decreased. However, the Commission maintains its position that internal border controls should only be applied in exceptional cases and should be of limited duration.
The committee also responded to Germany’s plans announced on Monday: Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had announced stationary border controls at the Polish and Czech borders to prevent illegal entry into German territory.
EU: Austria and Slovenia are working more closely together
The spokeswoman emphasized that the European Commission was in close contact with the Member States that had reported checks to Brussels. She also emphasized that the Slovenian and Austrian authorities would cooperate more closely, which the Commission welcomed.
The borders themselves are not controlled between Schengen members. However, it is possible to introduce extraordinary controls for a justified and limited period. For example, France controls the border with Italy because of the risk of terrorism and illegal immigration. Austria controls its borders with Hungary and Slovenia in view of migratory pressure on the EU’s external borders. The checks must be renewed every six months.
