The French president has instructed the island’s politicians to work within a period of six months on a constitutional proposal on the new status of Corsica, which has been agreed with the French government. Corsican leaders hope that Corsica will become ‘the autonomous region it should be’.
The President of France, Emmanuel Macronhas today spoken out in favor of granting “autonomy” to Corsica within the Republic and in favor of recognizing the historical and cultural “specificity” of the island in the Constitution with its own article.
In a long-awaited speech to the Corsican legislative assembly, dominated by nationalist political blocs, Macron mentioned a “historical moment” to overcome the ‘misunderstanding’ and ‘confrontation’ that have dominated relations between the island and the state in the past.
“I am in favor of entering a new phase,” he said, asking to “build autonomy” for Corsica not being “against the state or without the state.”but within the French Republic.
For this process, he has instructed the island’s politicians to work on a constitutional proposal on the new statute of Corsica, which has been agreed with the French government. a period of six months.
“There are no red lines” This task requires only the ideal of the Republic, which must be “strong enough” to better meet the “aspirations” of Corsica and its uniqueness, Macron assured.
Furthermore, the French President has recognized the need to… Corsican language so that it is given more space, both at the level of teaching and learning and at the level of its use in public life. The ultimate goal, according to the head of state, is “to fully anchor Corsica in the Republic” while recognizing “its unique character.”
Before Macron’s speech, the president of the Corsican Assembly said: Marie Antoinette Maupertuisand the head of the Corsican executive, Gilles Simeoniboth from the nationalist party Femu a Corsica, had also spoken of a historic moment and of the hope that Corsica would become “the autonomous territory that it should be”, while retaining its French, European and Mediterranean character.
The announced commitments are the result of a dialogue started last year between the Ministry of the Interior and the authorities of Corsica, in which the nationalists have gained electoral weight over the years and in which they control the Assembly and the island government.
This process followed the tensions against Paris that the island subsequently experienced dead in prison in March 2022 from the militant Yvan Colonnasentenced to life imprisonment for the 1998 murder of the prefect (deputy of the French government) Claude Érignac.
