Demonstration in Vienna – Red Youth demands free abortions

Date:

Youth organizations close to the SPÖ demonstrated on Thursday morning on Human Rights Square in Vienna for legal and free abortions (see video above). They hung coat hooks on a string, because abortions in countries with a ban are often performed with coat hooks.

The demonstrating activists came from the Action of Critical Students (AKS), the Association of Socialist Students (VSStÖ), the Socialist Youth (SJ) and the Young Generation (JG). They stopped Schuider, who described abortion as a “health issue, not a criminal issue.” The costs for an abortion are too high and locations are scarce, says Finn Kreilinger of the AKS.

Abortions should be free, safe and anonymous. In addition, free psychotherapy would also be required for a certain period after termination. For example, the activists criticized the planned abortion register in Tyrol, which is co-managed by the SPÖ. Motives will be collected there and in the future in Salzburg. If you have to register, youth organizations fear that there will be more inhibitions about having a safe abortion.

“Kowling for the bishop in Vorarlberg”
The situation in Vorarlberg is also currently being discussed. A private doctor from Bregenz who plans to close his practice at the end of this year is currently the only point of contact for abortions in the state. Plans to use an extension of the hospital in Bregenz as a temporary solution caused great excitement. There was also criticism from the Catholic Church. The SPÖ women speak of a dangerous development that is noticeable throughout Europe.

SPÖ women’s leader Eva-Maria Holzleitner said there was “kneeling by a governor before a Catholic bishop,” “even though there is a just decision for safe abortions.” Activists from the Viennese small party LINKS took part on Thursday evening. Slogans such as “No abortion is illegal” were spray-painted in front of the headquarters of the ÖVP and FPÖ parties.

Criticism: ‘Unborn child is not a disease’
As expected, the call for free and anonymous abortions is meeting resistance. Gabriela Huber, president of Youth for Life, spoke about the fact that “an unborn child is not a disease and abortion is not health care.” Abortions may not be performed in public hospitals.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 is International Safe Abortion Day. Another action on abortion will take place from 6 p.m. in Vienna around Human Rights Square – organized by Pro Choice Austria, Ciocia Wienia and Changes for Women, among others.
