Complicated situation, simple calculation: Alfred Riedl, as mayor of Grafenwörth, asked for the construction of noise barriers. The community ultimately paid 350,000 euros for exactly that. As a private individual, Riedl benefited financially from this.
In the market town of Grafenwörth there will soon be more coincidences than vacant properties. And the latest coincidence once again casts dark shadows on the Sonnenweiher housing project. As the “Krone” and “Profil” revealed, Alfred Riedl, the local and Austrian community association boss of Grafenwörth, earned around one million euros from the sale of four properties for the project. Riedl’s subsequent profits, as the “Profile” reports, were only made possible by investments that Riedl himself made, but not as a private investor, but as mayor.
Noise reduction measure
Before the properly completed deal could be completed in 2019, the four areas had to be converted into building land. And because his former buildings were located directly on the S5 highway and the current residents of Mini-Dubai did not want to be afraid of traffic noise, this was not possible without first raising the noise barriers. In 2017, Riedl personally, but on behalf of the market town, submitted an application for the noise barriers.
The project was carried out in 2021. The problem is that it was not Riedl himself who paid for this increase, but the community. This is now clear in black and white from a question answer addressed to the Minister of Green Climate Protection, Leonore Gewessler.
“As an expert on the country. . .”
This was what SPÖ municipal spokesperson Andreas Kollross wanted to know. He now says about the result: “As mayor, I find nothing objectionable about the installation of noise barriers to develop new settlements. But it becomes reprehensible if these walls are built at the expense of the community and therefore the taxpayers, so that the mayor can make a nice profit. The costs are socialized. The profits are privatized. This smacks of abuse of power. As an expert on the state of Lower Austria, I would not be surprised if not only municipal funds are used for this.”
Riedl did not want to take a stand against the “Krone” and the “Profil”. The “Krone” expressly states that Riedl is not accused of any prohibited acts and has not done so. However, given the new facts, the view is more skewed than ever.
