The People’s Party opened the hot phase of the EU elections on June 9 in Burgenland. In addition to top candidate Reinhold Lopatka, federal party chairman, Chancellor Karl Nehammer, was also present at the “beginning of the final sprint” in Oberwart.
The Oberwart fair was the stage for the prominent “ÖVP start of the last spurt” before the European elections on June 9, in which Chancellor Karl Nehammer also took part. For top candidate Reinhold Lopatka, it was actually a home game as Hartberger. Oberwart was deliberately chosen as a location, says outgoing EU mandate Christian Sagartz, because against all doubters he took the leap to Brussels five years ago and has had his European office in Oberwart ever since.
Chancellor and Secretary General: run, run, run
As a central force, the ÖVP advocates consistent protection of the external borders, a strong business location, common sense climate protection and a Europe that is close to its citizens. The ÖVP team’s support for its top candidate was clearly noticeable. “It is not Reinhold who will solve this, it is up to all of us to believe in a better Europe,” Chancellor Nehammer said. Run, run, run for him around the clock, said Vice President Secretary General Christian Stocker.
Burgenland as the EU’s largest beneficiary
Lopatka himself referred to Burgenland in his speech, because there is no other federal state in Austria that has benefited more from joining the EU. “Tackling things together, that should be the EU’s concept,” Lopatka said.
Two ÖVP candidates from Burgenland are competing for accession
With 35 percent, the ÖVP was number 1 in the 2019 EU elections, both nationally and in Burgenland. They don’t want to be deterred by worse forecasts. Burgenland itself has two candidates on the ÖVP list with Vanessa Tuder in 8th place and Bernd Pichlbauer in 29th place.
