With a view to the approaching summer holidays, the union calls on the federal government to “provide all children in Austria with comprehensive and affordable holiday care”. More than a quarter of parents do not know how to “guarantee continuous childcare in the summer,” says Korinna Schumann, vice president and women’s president of the ÖGB.
The federal government simply watches “as parents get lost in this healthcare chaos”. Those responsible would “act as if this is an individual problem, but we must tackle this task together as a society”.
Inflation exacerbates the problem even more
In addition, people suffer from enormous inflation and above all, many single parents can no longer afford to live.
“For many people, 500 euros for a week of summer camp is simply not affordable and expensive holiday care is therefore not even worth considering,” says Schumann.
Specific requirements
Parents should be juggling their vacation and “saving themselves during the summer”. Schumann therefore argues for a “legal right to a minimum of three weeks’ holiday during the summer holidays for parents with school-age children” and a sixth week’s holiday for everyone.
