According to insiders, Russian head of state Vladimir Putin is open to talks with future US president Donald Trump about a ceasefire in Ukraine. Of course, the Kremlin boss also sets a number of conditions.
Putin is ruling out major territorial concessions and insisting that Ukraine give up its NATO membership ambitions, Reuters news agency has learned from five people familiar with the deliberations. The Kremlin could largely agree to a freeze on the conflict along the front lines, including security guarantees for Ukraine.
Space for negotiation in annexed areas
There may be room for negotiations on the exact division of the four eastern regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson, three insiders said. The Kiev government’s Western allies, including Austria, repeatedly emphasize that there can be no peace without the participation of the Kiev government.
The government in Vienna recently increased aid to Ukraine by another eight million euros from the foreign disaster fund. In view of the approaching third winter of the war, approximately 2,000 refugees are currently coming to Austria from Ukraine every month, refugee coordinator Andreas Achrainer recently announced.
