The Russian Foreign Ministry has declared four employees of the Austrian embassy in Moscow undesirable. This is a reaction to the expulsion of four Russian diplomats from Austria. So diplomatic relations between the two countries are still tense.
The Austrian ambassador in Moscow, Werner Almhofer, was summoned to the Russian foreign ministry on Thursday, Russian television channel RBC reported. He was told that four employees of the diplomatic mission have been declared persona non gratae and must leave Russian territory before the end of February 23.
This is apparently a reaction to the expulsion of four Russians by the Austrian authorities on 2 February. Four Russian diplomats were also expelled from Vienna and Salzburg last year.
Concern about visas for Russians
Diplomatic skirmishes between Austria and Russia continue. As recently as February 12, representatives of 20 countries (including Ukraine, France, the United Kingdom and Poland) wrote a letter to the Austrian authorities demanding that the sanctioned Russian MPs not be allowed to attend the session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to attend in Vienna. However, Vienna insisted that it be obliged to issue visas to the representatives of all OSCE countries.
