“Win-win situation” – Tyrol wants to open the labor market to asylum seekers

Date:

At the invitation of regional councilor Astrid Mair (ÖVP), responsible for the Tyrolean labor market, a joint working meeting took place in the summer between the Chamber of Commerce, representatives of the TSD (Tyrolean Social Service) and the AMS. . With the aim of exploring possible synergies when it comes to the integration of asylum seekers into the domestic labor market. Mair has started a project that is unique in Austria. Motto: “If you can stay there, you should be able to work!”

“The domestic labor market must be able to fully utilize the existing potential,” State Councilor Mair told “Krone”. “So we need to encourage everyone who can work to work. And so that asylum seekers with a high chance of residence can be easily integrated into the domestic labor market, we must create incentives and also help local companies!”

A clear win-win situation for Mair
This approach is a clear win-win situation. For companies that urgently need employees and for asylum seekers who have a structured daily routine and can therefore integrate better.

“Unique in Austria in this form”
And what has happened so far? On the one hand, the Tyrol World Cup has already sent out feelers to interested companies to determine the requirements and needs of asylum seekers. On the other hand, the TSD has already made a pre-selection of potential employees or interested asylum seekers based on the World Cup surveys.

There will be another meeting in October. As Mair proudly says: this shape is unique in Austria.

“At the same time, there must also be consequences for all those who are allowed to stay and do not want to work or who have no prospect of a lasting right to stay anyway. In my opinion, it is simply not enough to pick the pockets of the host country and take a bite out of the prosperity pot. Especially because here in Tyrol, in times of labor shortage, these people don’t take away anyone’s jobs. Everyone who wants to live here must make their own contribution to be able to stand on their own two feet,” Mair is convinced.

General social security
Overall, the State Councilor, who has both the labor and security agendas under her control, is concerned about the security of society as a whole: “I want all those asylum seekers with a high chance of staying if they are with us , a fixed daily structure so that they do not simply stay in groups in public places and thus have a negative impact on the subjective feeling of safety among parts of the population.”

This means: “Those who are likely to be allowed to stay in Tyrol or Austria should be integrated relatively quickly. Conversely, this also means that all those who have little prospect of a permanent right to stay should not be integrated, so that a possible deportation process does not become unnecessarily complicated and lengthy.”
