60 emergency services fought a forest fire on Untersberg (Salzburg) for almost 24 hours. The fire broke out on Saturday in the Vierkaseralm area at an altitude of 1,530 meters. Early on Sunday afternoon there was talk of “fire out”.
The volunteer fire brigades Großgmain, Wals-Siezenheim and Bayrisch Gmain, together with the mountain rescue service Grödig and two helicopters, were on site on the Salzburg side of the mountain. They were supported by Flachgau flight helpers.
The fire brigade set up water containers on the ground from which the helicopter could fill with fire-fighting water.
Difficult firefighting operation
The operation was not easy for the fire brigade on the mountain: they had to extinguish the fire on impassable terrain. The Libelle police helicopter supported them. Emergency services kept a fire watch last night.
