The maternity ward of the Gipuzkoa Penitentiary Center will be operational in the second half of June and will have an investment of almost 80,000 euros. This new space will house mothers with babies under the age of three, “because prison from that age is not the most friendly environment for the development of a minor,” as he noted during his visit to the center this Friday, the Equality Minister , Justice and Social Policy of the Basque Government, Beatriz Artolazabal.

The supervisor notes that this maternity ward will also be versatile. “According to our short-term estimates, this space could be used by one or two mothers with their babies, so we thought it could also house other inmates who are visited by their sons and daughters under the age of 10; that is, make use of the children’s area on the ground floor for cozy use on those family visits,” he specified.

The maternity ward will have 406 square meters, spread over two levels. On the first floor of 246 square meters there will be seven cells, two of which are larger, and the showers; while the ground floor, 160 square meters, will house three small rooms, a living room and a patio with a children’s playground and rubber floors.

In addition to the versatility of its use, it is also temporary, as the new correctional center in Zubieta under construction will have this Unit from the start. This morning, the Minister led the Justice Delegation that visited the renovation works for the future maternity ward of Gipuzkoa Prison.
