The United States announced on Friday that it has removed ETA from its list of terrorist organizations.
In the case of ETA, it is assumed that: “is no longer involved in terrorism or terrorist activity, nor does it retain the capacity or intention to be”which explains the departure from the list.
The measure comes four years after announcing the disbandment and 11 years after the armed organization announced a permanent cessation of violence.
The United States Department of State has justified this move in the sense that it Spain’s “success” when it comes to ending the threat of ETA.
ETA was designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) in August 1997 when the list was drawn up.
