The increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) poses new challenges for consumers, authorities, etc. The Austrian federal government is therefore introducing a labeling requirement for AI.
AI can bring Austria around seven billion euros more added value by 2035, State Secretary for Digitalization Florian Tursky (ÖVP) said on Sunday.
However, he also highlighted the challenges posed by its use. “Our goal is to use AI solutions in the spirit of a digitally responsible society and European values”: “The performance of AI systems doubles approximately every 3.5 months.”
“Just as nutritional information is common for food, in the future every Austrian should know when he comes into contact with artificial intelligence,” says Tursky.
In doing so, he sounded the same tune as Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the Austrian National Council in May 2023. “Medicines, food, etc.” may only be placed on the market after detailed checks and the completion of complex approval procedures.
There is no reason why these standards should not also apply to AI and social media, Sobotka said at the time. “Polarization, conspiracy theories and fake news” would “fuel the demonization of minorities” in a discourse that has already become more aggressive.
