Smuggling crime and terrorism – the SPÖ calls for strict border controls and the deportation of potential perpetrators already in the country. There are up to 70 threats. It is proposed to reassess the risk potential.
Dramatic scenes occur again and again when smugglers break through the border with trucks full of migrants or flee from the police in Hungary and race to Austria. “The illegal activities of the smuggling mafia are largely financed by terrorism,” police said.
There are already many extremists in the country
Since Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel, possible threats have been included in measures to protect the border. The focus is on controls intended to prevent dangerous people from infiltrating, it is said. But some extremists are already in Austria. Officially there are 50 to 70 threats.
With 200 people it cannot be ruled out that they could be dangerous. The SPÖ Burgenland is now moving forward. Club chairman Roland Fürst proposes to reassess the potential threat associated with Islamist-motivated terrorism.
Nearly 400,000 applications since 2015
From the point of view of the SPÖ club president, a reassessment of the risk situation can only be successful “if Austria gets the escalating smuggling crime and the number of asylum applications under control.” Since 2015, 392,717 asylum applications have been submitted. This puts Austria among the top in Europe.
“With currently 256 asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants, Austria ranks second in the EU after Cyprus,” the SPÖ club chairman emphasizes. He blames the ÖVP for everything, especially Interior Minister Karner and Chancellor Nehammer.
Doskozil against veto
Proposed solutions are on the table for the SPÖ: Fürst repeats a demand from Governor Hans Peter Doskozil, who spoke out against the Schengen veto of the federal government of Bulgaria and Romania. “The federal government could have linked its approval of the Schengen expansion to the establishment of processing centers outside the EU between Bulgaria and Turkey. “That was missed,” Fürst complains. For the SPÖ, the only option now is to take rigorous action against dangerous people.
