Velvet paw “Lilly” starved to death when she was trapped in a cage. Another cat in the area may have also fallen into the live trap…
“I don’t even want to imagine what torment and fear of death our four-legged darling had to endure,” describes “Lilly’s” shocked wife Annemarie Schwanzer. Days earlier, her kitten had disappeared without a trace near Utzenlaa in the Tulln district. Then it was a sad certainty that her cat had ended up in a “steel prison” from which there was no escape.
Have any more cats fallen into a trap?
“Lilly” was found by a neighbor who was looking for his own cat. His ‘Lucie’ was missing for ten days before dragging herself home, emaciated and seriously injured. It’s easy to assume that this velvet paw also fell into the living trap.
Schwanzer filed a complaint demanding that the suspected hunter’s hunting license be revoked. By law, a live trap – intended for predators such as martens or foxes – must be checked daily.
The increasing number of incidents – as was recently reported, several cats in Lower Austria were shot in cold blood or seriously injured – Madelein Petrovic, chairman of Animal Welfare Austria, calls for tough action from state hunter Sepp Pröll: “These conditions in the Wild West must come to an end an end!”
