Recently, there have been repeated reports of anti-Semitic attacks, for example at Vienna’s Central Cemetery. Ariel Muzicant suspects that this is mainly due to Islamists who are not well integrated in Europe. The chairman of the European Jewish Congress was a guest on “ZiB 2” on Friday evening.
That’s why he broke Shabbat, the day of rest, for the first time, he said at the beginning of the interview. The situation in Austria and throughout Europe is very worrying for Jews. They often feel left alone, said the vice president of the World Jewish Congress. That is why he and his team also call Jews who live alone.
Not enough for hostages
Muzicant recently spoke with family members of hostages. The youngest Hamas hostage is only nine months old, the oldest is 87 years old. She suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. According to him, aid organizations do nothing to at least visit and check on the hostages. This is also a form of anti-Semitism. At this point he pointed out that Hamas is one of the worst terrorist organizations in the world, worse than Islamic State (IS).
About 1.5 million Jews live in Europe. Currently, many people no longer dare to leave the house or no longer send their children to school because of anti-Semitic incidents. According to the 71-year-old, these incidents are mainly caused by Islamists who are not integrated into Europe. The values and laws in Austria should be made clear to newcomers.
Small hardships as a weakness of democracy
Musician had already said that there cannot be asylum for everyone. He confirmed this in “ZiB 2”. A weakness of democracy is that it is not possible to take tough action against terrorist forces. At the same time, the president of the European Jewish Congress said Austrian security forces were already doing what they could. It is simply impossible to monitor every Jewish location as a store.
Security installations in Europe now need to be expanded; anti-Semitic incidents have already increased fivefold. At the same time, Muzicant pointed out that hatred is not only directed against Jews, but also, for example, against ordinary passers-by on the street. What is needed is not just talk, but action.
