The Greens are still leaving it open about who will run for the EU elections in June: the federal congress, at which the top candidate and the other list will be elected, has been postponed from December 16 to February 24. They do not want to artificially prolong the election campaign ‘in a particularly turbulent atmosphere’.
After the dramatic international events of recent weeks, the Greens’ federal leadership unanimously came to the conclusion that the date for the federal congress in Graz had to be changed.
“Sentiment worsened since Hamas attack”
“The mood has further deteriorated since the terrorist attack on Israel and the massacre of the Jewish population by Hamas on October 7. We are also feeling the effects in Austria, where polarization is noticeably increasing,” Federal Director Angela Stoytchev said in a statement.
“Election campaigns, we have to be honest, usually contribute to escalation and polarization. And the nomination of candidates for an election is usually the starting signal for an election campaign. As Greens, we have therefore decided that it is better not to start the European election campaign early, just before Christmas.”
The top candidate is still missing
It is still unclear who will lead the Greens in the EU elections. They are currently represented in the EU Parliament with three mandates, held by Monika Vana, Thomas Waitz and Sarah Wiener. The rumor mill also brought into play Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler and Justice Minister Alma Zadic.
In any case, Green National Councilor Michel Reimon has announced that he wants to stand as a candidate for the EU elections. When asked, the answer was negative whether the new date for the federal congress could also have something to do with the fact that the party could not yet agree on a person.
