The motives behind femicide are diverse and complex. They are often based on gender inequality and toxic masculinity. In just eight months this year, Wednesday marked the 25th murder of women in Austria.
The SPÖ women’s leader Eva-Maria Holzleitner is shocked: “We have a very sad record. Women are murdered because of their gender. Politicians must take more action. The violence starts with news like this “You belong with me“, “Possessive thinking is a patriarchal pattern.”

Jealousy, desire for control and the need for power and dominance are other reasons for these violent acts. In some cases, femicides are also the result of psychological problems among the perpetrators. Women who live in constant fear of violence are exposed to physical and psychological stress. According to Holzleitner, there is a dense network of supporting organizations. There are violence protection centers in all states. The Women’s Helpline advice and support services are free and available 24 hours a day. The advisors are obliged to absolute confidentiality. “Violence knows no class, it occurs in many families. “The possessive and patriarchal thinking that everything must be demolished,” the SPÖ women’s spokesperson is certain.
