ÖVP Chat Affair – Threat of Punishment – Wolf Comes Before the U Commission

Date:

The parliamentary inquiry into suspected corruption by ÖVP representatives will question one of the richest Austrians next week: the businessman Siegfried Wolf has promised – after threatening a fine – to visit on Wednesday. Most of all, he has to answer questions about a suspected illegal tax cut for him. Former Finance Minister Hans-Jörg Schelling (ÖVP) testified after him on the same subject.

Wolf had intervened with the Treasury because of an additional tax payment. On the day of the so-called closing meeting between the financial accountants and Wolf’s tax advisers, former ÖBAG boss Thomas Schmid wrote to Schelling: “We reached an agreement today with Sigi. 75:25. He pays between 7 and 8 million euros. still to be calculated He called me several times and wanted to go back to 6. This was impossible for us to intervene during the ongoing negotiations I think our financial management has moved on this deal and both parties should be happy. “

Ex-Finance Minister inaugurated?
Even before the deal – which ultimately did not materialize – Schelling should have been informed, which is also substantiated by chats. If the large-scale audit holds its stance, Wolf “will have to fight an appeal,” the former finance minister said, asking Schmid to “delete the text immediately.” – and the Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (WKStA) has been identified as a suspect.

Party donations are also a problem
The WKStA’s agreement with the former finance minister states that for “irrelevant” motives, he has instructed cabinet employees to provide financial benefits to entrepreneur Wolf, as a key supporter of the ÖVP. It is expected that Wolf’s gifts to the party will also be an issue on the first day of the investigation.

In any case, both informants – Wolf and then Schelling – agreed. Schmid has also been formally invited to this day – but there is still no reply from him to the U-committee.

Other sources of information
The head of the legal group in Alexander Van der Bellen’s presidential office, Georg Frölichsthal, is the first person to provide information on Thursday. The ÖVP invited him because he was said to have expressed skepticism about the execution in the Ministry of Finance because the files had not been delivered to the Ibizan Commission of Inquiry. After him, it is the turn of the Chief Financial Officer, Wolfgang Peschorn. He will probably be asked about several topics at once.
