Presidential and parliamentary elections have started in Serbia at 7 a.m. At the same time, local elections are taking place in Belgrade and 13 other municipalities. According to all opinion polls, current president Aleksandar Vucic and his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), in power since 2012, are looking forward to another election victory.
Eight candidates are running for the presidency, with Vucic, who is seeking a second term, in the lead by a clear margin. 19 parties and alliances compete for 250 seats in parliament. However, only a few of them are likely to pass the three percent threshold.
Hardly any improvement in electoral conditions
Leading opposition forces boycotting the latest parliamentary elections in June 2020 are taking part this time, although domestic election observers say election conditions have not really improved significantly.
The vote will be followed by more than 5,000, mostly local election observers. The OSCE is on site with 265 observers. More than 6.5 million citizens of Serbia have the right to vote, according to the latest information from the Election Commission. The polling stations will remain open until 8 p.m. The first unofficial election results are expected around 10 p.m.
