Parliamentary elections will be held in Hungary on Sunday. This time, the opposition is carrying out a joint list against Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party, who has been in power for 12 years. Polling stations open at 6:00 AM (CEST) and close at 7:00 PM. Opinion polls put ruling party Fidesz back in the lead.
Fidesz is said to have increased his lead on the opposition list, especially since the war in Ukraine started in late February. Orbán, who has had a very pro-Russian policy for years, emphasizes his efforts to keep the NATO country of Hungary out of the war since the war broke out.
Joint top candidate for the first time
For the first time, the opposition has a common top candidate in the mayor of the southeastern Hungarian city of Hódmezövásárhely, Péter Márki-Zay. In each of the 106 constituencies, the opposition alliance also nominates a joint candidate.
The elections for the 199 seats in parliament are held in a mixed form of list and personal elections.
