At the beginning of the meeting on Thursday, National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) commented on the accusations made against him in Pilnacek’s audio recordings. He wanted to make it “unmistakably clear” that these “do not correspond in any way to the truth.” He does not meet the numerous requirements until his dismissal.
Sobotka said in his brief statement that “at no time” did he attempt to influence the former head of the legal department, Christian Pilnacek, on ongoing proceedings, investigations or freezing orders.
Regrets the discussion about the office
The background is that a secretly recorded conversation became known in which Pilnacek made these accusations against the People’s Party, namely against Sobotka, in a friendly atmosphere. The President of the National Council emphasized that the recording was made “illegally”. He regrets that this has also led to a discussion about the office.
In terms of content, Sobotka emphasized that he had truthfully stated in the investigative committee that he had not influenced any investigation. Pilnacek himself also announced this at the same point.
Remains in office
He will continue to exercise his office in accordance with legal requirements and to the “best of his knowledge and belief” and will continue to rely on constructive and appreciative cooperation with Members of Parliament. Because democracy is “tested every day,” Sobotka emphasized.
FPÖ sign protests
This does not please the opposition, which had previously unanimously called for Sobotka’s resignation. The FPÖ expressed its wish to resign with plaques. The third chairman of the National Council, Norbert Hofer, even held the sign “Sobotka must go” in his hand.
