The new list of shortage professions includes 110 national and 48 regional professions. So-called green jobs also exist in the mobility sector.
In 2024, eight additional public transport professions will be added for the first time, such as train driver/conductor or bus driver. For all these professions that do not require special school training or apprenticeship, the respective professional qualifications must be recognized in accordance with the relevant railway and traffic regulations.
“Sustainable transformation and technological development lead to new job profiles that are becoming increasingly important for achieving climate goals. In the future, it must be ensured that jobs in public transport and rail freight transport are taken into account, which are necessary for the expansion of sustainable forms of mobility,” said Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Kocher (ÖVP).
“By including climate protection professions in the list of shortage professions, we are contributing to ensuring that there are enough skilled workers in Austria for this important task,” said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens).
Waiter is no longer on the list
For example, waiters may no longer appear on the national list of shortage professions. The Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ) would also have liked to see truck drivers included on the list. According to WKÖ Secretary General Karlheinz Kopf, an increase instead of just an adjustment of the quota for seasonal workers would have been in the best interest of the economy.
