Visibly frustrated – Economy: former Chancellor Kern warns of domino effect

Date:

Former Chancellor Christian Kern now works as a manager in Germany and is very concerned about the future of Europe. “It seems as if all the fuses have blown,” says the ex-politician, visibly frustrated.

“You get the feeling that the Germans have not only forgotten how to play football,” the 57-year-old analyzes in a guest article for “Bild”. As chairman of the supervisory board of a highly specialized glass manufacturer for the solar energy industry, he was able to gain a comprehensive picture of our neighbor.

The former Chancellor follows the development with great regret; he said he has failed to make the country fit for the future with the best interest rates in transportation, railways, telecommunications and education. “This will of course fail spectacularly… Future opportunities and future jobs will be lost,” is his conclusion.

Warning of domino effect
He now fears that Germany could drag the whole of Europe into a crisis. The “German problem” is a European problem. “Germany is the locomotive that must not fail,” Kern warns.

The ex-politician is already feeling the turbulence in the solar energy industry. One of the reasons is that Germany and the EU do not impose punitive duties on cheap solar panels from China. Asian producers ‘sell’ their excess capacity in Germany and ‘strangle the domestic industry’.

Trapped in old patterns
The solar energy industry is the cheapest way to generate electricity and is now in danger of disappearing into a “big black hole”. What is needed is a “fair political concept that creates investment security and ensures that we in Europe do not become even more technologically dependent,” Kern warns. However, he sees no learning effect. This mistake was made in the field of energy – and Germany is making this mistake again with future technologies…
