Austrian-Israeli citizen Tal Shoham continues to be held hostage by the terrorist organization Hamas. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) is trying to mediate – and now wants to send his special foreign policy adviser, Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, to Qatar.
The emirate is considered a key mediator in the war in the Middle East and its efforts have already made it possible to free dozens of Hamas hostages. On Tuesday afternoon, Nehammer called the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani, as the Federal Chancellery has now announced. The conversation is part of intensive efforts at all levels to save Tal Shoham.
During his visit to Israel in October, Nehammer met the kidnapped man’s father, Gilad Korngold, and invited him to a meeting at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna, which took place last Friday:
His son Tal Shoham has been in the hands of terrorists since October 7. During the Hamas attack on Israel, Tal Shoham’s wife, their two children (aged eight and three), and the woman’s mother were also kidnapped. Fortunately, they were released on November 25.
“Don’t give up hope”
“Our demand to Hamas remains clear: all hostages must be finally and unconditionally released,” Nehammer emphasized after the phone call. He condemned the fact that people were used as shields and “used for the barbaric activities of the terrorist organization.”
“We do not lose hope and will continue to do everything we can to ensure that Austrian-Israeli dual national Tal Shoham is released.” The Chancellor considered the achievements of the State of Qatar in releasing hostages and supporting the civilian population as very valuable and important. Saving human lives will require the international community of states and joint efforts at all levels, Nehammer said.
