On Thursday, the National Council extended the right of residence and health insurance for Ukrainian refugees in Austria. Both now apply until March 4, 2025. The FPÖ voted against.
The Displaced Persons Ordinance, which regulates the right of residence for Ukrainian refugees, is based on the EU’s so-called mass influx directive. This was extended in October for another year until March 4, 2025. So far, the right of residence in Austria has also been extended. On Thursday, the committee approved the corresponding regulation by Minister of Social Affairs Johannes Rauch (Greens).
The FPÖ, which voted against, demanded calculations of the previous costs of health insurance for refugees from Ukraine. Rauch promised to submit it later.
Social assistance recipients remain insured for medical expenses
The same regulation also stipulates that recipients of social assistance or minimum income are included in health insurance. This will also be extended after the scheme expires at the end of this year. Those affected will now have health insurance until the end of 2025.
According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, this will cost the federal government 81.6 million euros in 2024 and 75.3 million euros in 2025. The states will incur costs of 64.4 million euros (2024) and 66.3 million euros (2025).
