Sánchez and Feijóo agreed on Friday that Brussels would mediate in the process to renew the CGPJ. The leader of the PP has denounced that the president of the Spanish government has the “room for maneuver” left by the independents.
The European Commission (EC) stated on Saturday that it is “thinking” about the request to monitor the negotiations on the reform of the European Union General Council for the Judiciary (CGPJ), following the agreement reached on Friday by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
“Spanish authorities have asked the Commission to facilitate discussions to promote the reform of the General Council of the Judiciary,” community sources indicate. “We are currently considering this request“.
They recalled that the EC has expressed its position in its reports on the rule of law: it considers it “important” that the issue of the lack of appointments of CGPJ members is addressed as a “priority”.
At the same time, it underlines the need to initiate “immediately after the renewal” a process to “adapt the appointment system to European standards, to ensure that the judicial independence is not compromised.”
Sánchez and Feijóo, at the latter’s proposal, agreed during a meeting in Congress on Friday that the European Commission would monitor negotiations on the renewal of the judges’ governing body, after five years without renewal due to a lack of consensus between the parties.
