Wars, scandals, inflation: Christmas 2023 will hopefully herald a better year. The Federal President speaks with Conny Bischofberger – for the first time together with his wife – about the desire for a little peace and reflection on the good, but also about bad criticism from Herbert Kickl and the investigation against Wolfgang Sobotka.
The official residence of the Federal President on Ballhausplatz in Vienna is decorated with numerous poinsettias. During the holidays they continue to bloom in the Caritas Socialis hospice on Rennweg. The walk on the 56.30 meter long red carpet leads past the Hall of Mirrors, where the Christmas tree from Bad Eisenkappel is located. It is five meters high and decorated with red balls, straw stars, gingerbread and bows.
The famous wallpaper door opens in the former bedroom of Empress Maria Theresa. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and his wife Doris Schmidauer come out, accompanied by ‘Juli’, the Greek street dog who now resides in the presidential office. She participates in the double interview in the president’s study, but soon falls asleep and trembles in her dreams. Later she proudly and gracefully poses for the photographer “Krone”.
“Kron”: Mr. President, what is it like for you to have your wife with you during this interview?
Alexander Van der Bellen: In fact, we rarely give interviews together. I think it is even the first time as Federal President. Otherwise it’s more of a rule that Doris is there. Especially when visiting and visiting our state guests. We do a lot together and I like that. In the evening we discuss what has been done and what still needs to be done. I imagine it would be difficult to fill this position all by myself.
