The Austrian government is supporting the Palestinian civilian population with five million euros. The money will go to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations World Food Program, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday.
A large proportion of people in Gaza are currently dependent on aid deliveries, the report said. The Red Cross and the World Food Program would continue to have access to the Gaza Strip and could provide immediate assistance on the ground despite extremely difficult circumstances. Furthermore, these proven partnerships ensure “that aid from Austria actually benefits the people in Gaza and is not diverted or misused by the terrorist organization Hamas or other terrorist organizations.”
Schallenberg: “Deeply affected”
“I am deeply affected by the situation in Gaza,” Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) said in a broadcast. It was noted that living conditions of the civilian population had deteriorated dramatically and an acute hunger crisis was looming. “The terrorist organization Hamas has ruled the narrow coastal strip with an iron fist since it came to power in 2007 and has done nothing to improve the situation of the civilian population (…),” Schallenberg continued.
Three million euros must now go to the Red Cross and two million to the World Food Program. The funds are intended, among other things, for (emergency) health services and basic facilities such as water, food, blankets and household appliances.
So far 13 million euros for Palestine
Since the start of the war in the Middle East, the Austrian government has paid 13 million euros to support the civilian population in the region. For example, part of the money comes from the Foreign Disaster Fund, which is part of the Humanitarian Aid Fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The civilian population needs our support and we are helping,” Schallenberg concludes. Moreover, it remains a priority to immediately free the Israeli hostages from the Gaza Strip from the hands of Hamas.
