German Chancellor Olaf Scholz views developments in Austria with a possible chancellorship of FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl “with great concern,” as he recently stated. Now he spoke out again against Kickl at the SPD party conference in Berlin.
The election campaigning German head of government, whose three-party coalition with the Greens and the FDP collapsed shortly before Christmas, criticized current efforts to form a government in Austria. About the blue National Council election winner, Scholz said: “He is, there is no other way to put it, an extreme right-wing man.”
‘It’s serious. “It’s a damn serious time,” the SPD politician continued. The fact that a right-winger in the neighboring country is now likely to become head of government “is something that we cannot simply accept.” The Social Democrat thus indicated a difficult relationship between the two neighboring countries – of course on the condition that both Kickl and Scholz meet as counterparts.
SPD fell behind in 4th place
In a current study, the SPD only comes in fourth place. The trade union parties CDU/CSU are in the lead, followed by the AfD and the Greens. The Social Democrats are trying to catch up at a party conference in Berlin. Scholz will be officially confirmed there as the red candidate for chancellor for the federal elections on February 23. Scholz will also deliver the keynote address to the 600 delegates.
