Agriculture is increasingly becoming a planned economy, says the chairman of the Freedom Farmers’ Association, Peter Schmiedlechner, in the krone.tv lecture. “We are told when to fertilize and from what point we can harvest.” Among other things, he is also concerned about the EU reforms of genetic engineering laws: “We have now set up organic production in Austria to produce quality. This decision settles it once and for all.”
A few weeks ago the way was cleared for accession negotiations with Ukraine. Schmielechner warns of unforeseeable consequences for EU financial policy and domestic agriculture. “Ukraine alone could expect around €96.5 billion in EU agricultural support within seven years. This automatically means that we, the Member States that now receive agricultural funds within the EU, have to redistribute the money. Then a lot of money will be pumped into Ukraine.”
“Cheap junk food from Ukraine”
The fact that genetically contaminated grain contaminated with pesticides has been coming to Europe and Austria since the grain deal expired is also a thorn in the side of the president of the Freedom Farmers’ Association. Due to the lack of an indication of origin, Austrian consumers currently have no idea where the flour or grain in the cake they buy in the supermarket comes from. “You think you are buying quality, but then you get cheap junk food from Ukraine.”
“It looks more like we are adapting to Ukraine”
Schmielechner does not believe that Ukraine would have to adjust its quality standards with EU membership. “The signs are that we are more likely to adapt to Ukraine. If the European Commission now clears the way for the sale of genetically modified food in Europe, the way forward will be to ensure that we adapt to Ukraine and not the other way around.” very difficult to estimate. “It is an intervention in nature and nature usually always takes revenge.”
