The trial of ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) and his former chief of staff Bernhard Bonelli for making false statements in the Ibiza Commission of Inquiry will take place on January 10. ÖBAG Commissioner Iris Ortner and former Finance Minister Gernot Blümel have been invited as witnesses.
Ortner should be asked about her perception of positions in the state holding company. On January 25, former Finance Minister Gernot Blümel is expected to testify in the Grand Jury Hall of the Vienna Regional Court.
More witnesses from ÖBAG’s supervisory board were invited
On January 30, Helmut Kern, chairman of the ÖBAG supervisory board, Bernd Brünner, former secretary general of the Federal Chancellery, and Susanne Höllinger, member of the ÖBAG supervisory board, will take the witness stand. On January 31, Günther Helm, former head of discounter Hofer and later member of the supervisory board of ÖBAG, will follow. It is still unclear when two Russian businessmen will be questioned, who former ÖBAG boss Thomas Schmid is said to have met last August for a ‘job interview’ in Amsterdam.
Six days of negotiations sometimes lasted into the evening
Kurz and Bonelli are accused by the prosecutor of giving false testimony as informants for the U-Commission, in particular in connection with the establishment of ÖBAG and the composition of the management and supervisory boards of this company. The defendants deny this. Since the trial began on October 18, six days of negotiations have taken place to clarify the question of guilt, some of which have continued well into the evening hours.
