Comrades expect the former SPÖ chancellor to be proven right instead of leaving the party.
Does he fly, go or stay? In view of the princely millions in compensation and his role as chairman of Signa’s supervisory board, calls for ex-SPÖ chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer to be expelled from the party have recently become louder in more and more states.
New documents show that Gusenbauer should have received twice the “chancellor’s compensation” of 280,000 euros promised by real estate juggler René Benko in one year. Today, Saturday, clarity should emerge on the issue of his dismissal. As the “Krone” of the federal party and the ex-chancellor’s entourage confirmed, he wants to explain himself about Signa and his deals in an interview with Ö1.
Comrades and party friends expect justification rather than dismissal. “The only person who could convince him to leave would be Mayor Michael Ludwig,” an insider reveals. It is considered unlikely that Ludwig will try to convince him or that he will be expelled.
The ex-chancellor has a powerful advocate in the Carinthian head of state Peter Kaiser. And in Lower Austria, where Gusenbauer joined the SPÖ in 1979, the state party is passing the ball back to his famous comrade. “It is not up to me to say anything to him,” said state party manager Wolfgang Zwaander.
