The state elections will take place in Burgenland in about a year. State leader Doskozil now presents a draft for limiting election advertising. Discussions will follow with the other parties.
The upper limit for the costs of election campaigns was announced at the SPÖ state party conference in May 2022. A concrete draft is now on the table. “We are planning a significant reduction in expenditure on election advertisements, with an upper limit of 300,000 euros,” explains SPÖ state leader Hans Peter Doskozil.
The population would not understand a material struggle that costs millions, especially in times of rising prices. People are in favor of careful use of public resources. “In my view, politics must convince through content,” says Doskozil. Pursuing votes with an expensive flood of giveaways or posters would be irresponsible, especially in times like these. At the same time, transparency and fair conditions are created. Other important points of the design:
- Check: The costs of the election campaign must be carefully examined, and the State Audit Office must also play a role in this. An amendment to the relevant law is in preparation.
- Violations: To ensure that parties comply with regulations, campaign cost excesses must be strictly penalized.
- Allowance: The preferential vote plays an important role in the state elections in Burgenland. A modest allowance for personal advertising material is therefore provided for individual candidates.
Negotiations with the other parties
SPÖ club chairman Roland Fürst announced the implementation before the state elections. Negotiations with the other factions will begin from February. “We are sure that they will agree with this, especially since the SPÖ, as the strongest party, does not benefit from this upper limit,” Fürst explains.
