During a speech at the UN Security Council, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) once again emphasized the need for a two-state solution in the Middle East. This is the only way Israel’s long-term security can be guaranteed, he said in New York on Tuesday. He called on his Arab neighbors not to be held hostage by the terrorist organization Hamas.
The situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip is “heartbreaking,” but peace in the region is possible, Schallenberg said optimistically.
“Normalization brings benefits for everyone”
“Normalization brings political and economic benefits for everyone. Arab partners must not allow themselves to be held hostage by Hamas,” the Foreign Minister said. At the same time, the Palestinian Authority must “finally meet the legitimate expectations of its people.”
Schallenberg again called on the international community to do more: “By bringing all hostages home. By alleviating humanitarian suffering in Gaza. By fighting together against terrorism. And by laying the foundation for a life of peace and dignity for both Israelis and Palestinians.”
Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
On the sidelines of the debate in New York, Schallenberg also wants to meet his counterparts Riad al-Malki (Palestine), Ayman Safadi (Jordan), Abdallah Bou Habib (Lebanon) and Hakan Fidan (Turkey) for talks. An exchange is also planned with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi and Algeria’s chief diplomat Ahmed Attaf, as well as with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
