Following the meeting of the Government Council, the Secretary General of the European Union and Foreign Action, Marian Elorza, announced last week the details of this trip, which will last until Wednesday, January 31.

Lehendakari’s agenda starts on Monday with a meeting with the European Vice President for the Promotion of European Lifestyle, Margaritis Schinas, responsible for migration and asylumand with skills in education and culture.

The Lehendakari will present the ‘Basque Welcome Model’ and the initiatives it is considering to guarantee the social integration of migrants and people in need of protection. During their meeting, Urkullu will also seek the European Commission’s support for the demand official status of the Basque Country in the EU.

On Tuesday, the meeting will take place with the Vice President of Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Suiça, with whom she will share the proposals of the Initiative of European Regions with Legislative Powers (RLEG), led by Euskadi, to ensure their participation in the decision-making process. of EU policy.

In the afternoon, the Lehendakari will meet with the Vice President of the Green Pact, Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight, Maros Sefcovic, to whom he will convey the latest projects promoted in Euskadi in the field of green transition.

He will then meet with Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, to review the Atlantic Arc Commission’s recent initiatives to promote Atlantic macroregionfor which he will ask your support.

The day will end with a reception for the Basque community in Brussels, in which the partners of the RLEG initiative will participate.

On Wednesday, the last day of the visit, the Lehendakari will take part in a forum organized in the European Parliament by the group of MEPs Caucus for Self-Determination, in which a proposal for a regulation will be presented to “establish the conditions for democratic exercise of the right to self-determination in the European Union”.

According to Elorza, this proposal is a draft regulation, drawn up at the request of various groups in the European Parliament. Moreover, he pointed out that it is predicted that Urkullu will participate in the afternoon session together with the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Pere Aragonés.

The Secretary General of Foreign Action has explained that this is Lehendakari’s fifth trip to community institutions over three terms in office, as the European Union “occupies a priority position in the foreign action” of the Basque government, which “maintains permanent contact with the European Union”.
