Touching words from a Holocaust survivor from Canada, who is now an Austrian citizen.
The political tug-of-war over citizenship is out of place here: during her working visit to Canada, Justice Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) welcomed two Holocaust survivors as neo-Austrians on Friday. Edna Magder and Daniel Horovitz not only lost relatives to the National Socialists, but also part of their identities.
Since September 2020, Holocaust victims and survivors from Austria have the option to get the red-white-red passport back. “I’ve got part of my identity back,” Horovitz said at the handover. Edtstadler: “We cannot make up for the atrocities committed during the Nazi regime. What I can promise is that we will always do everything we can to fight anti-Semitism.”
The federal minister also met several Austrian entrepreneurs – including Frank Stronach, who is now fully committed to the eco idea with his new company “Frank’s Organic Garden” and plans to launch his mini electric car in the near future.
