There are many reasons for a so-called Super Election Sunday in June. An “efficient election campaign” that does not spill over into the summer months, but also tax savings would be possible in this case. Nevertheless, there are voices of caution: municipalities would face an enormous amount of work if EU and National Council elections were held at the same time. “If a mistake is made here, new elections will have to be held and that would not help anyone,” said Nikolaus Frings, domestic policy journalist for “Krone”.
But what is the argument for bringing forward the National Council elections? “Believing that the election campaign will not get dirty is an illusion anyway. It will be dirty anyway,” says the domestic policy journalist from “Krone” in an interview with Jana Pasching, when asked whether early elections would also indicate fear of confrontation on the part of the ÖVP. Within the ÖVP, they hope for better opportunities than in the autumn after Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s speech.
“You would have just cowered.”
Before the elections currently scheduled for the fall, U committees are planned and began their work in January. “If there really are early elections, there is little point in destroying anything else here. You would just huddle together.” It tends to go in the direction of saying we will wait and make alliances, and in this case the U committees will follow suit in the fall after the elections.
