Thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday afternoon with the motto “Defend democracy!” It started at 3pm at Graz Main Station and ended with a sea of lights on the main square.
After many German cities and Vienna, Graz now revolted against the right. “We are taking to the streets for democracy,” says Lilly Jagl (38), press spokesperson for the organizers. The ‘Solidarity Alliance for Human Rights and Democracy’, consisting of dozens of sub-organizations, brought 2,500 people onto the streets. 5000 were registered.
The meeting point was at Graz Main Station at 3pm, before the crowd moved towards the main square via Annenstrasse. Around 6 p.m. there was a large sea of lights.
“Right-wing extremism is a real problem and a danger to our democracy, we can no longer close our eyes,” says Ulrike Leger-Pölzl of “Granny’s Against the Right”, who also participated.
Jagl explains that a similar picture to that in Germany has long been visible in Austria and across Europe. There is still a lot to do before the fall elections.
The common goal: “This year we will prevent the right-wing extremists from gaining power, so that they will neither be the chancellor nor be part of the government,” said Erich Fenninger, director of Volkshilfe Österreich, who already helped organize the great meeting in Vienna.
