Former SPÖ leader and doctor Pamela Rendi-Wagner could soon have a new job. She and three other people have been shortlisted to become heads of an EU health authority.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is located in Stockholm. The shortlist was determined by the European Commission. To become director, Rendi-Wagner needs a two-thirds majority on the authority’s board of directors. At the beginning of January it was announced that the ex-politician applied for the position.
That was the December 2023 job advertisement.
“Together with the Ministry of Health, we naturally support Rendi-Wagner’s candidacy. As a former Minister of Health and board member of the ECDC, and because of her relevant medical training, she is ideally suited for this role,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at the time.
The decision will be made next week
The decision on who will get the position should be made by the middle of next week. The ECDC was founded in 2004 and has been led by German doctor Andrea Ammon since 2017. She will leave this position in mid-June 2024.
